Research skills training for Engineers

The following sessions are offered to members of the Department of Engineering. Both sessions will take place in Lecture Room 4 in the Thom Building. To book a place at either workshop, please email the Engineering librarian Alessandra Vetrugno.

Finding research information in Engineering
Monday 29th February, 15.00-16.00

Key topics:

  • How to access library websites and key engineering information portals
  • How to find and search key electronic databases
  • How to develop search strategies to search effectively
  • Where to find full-text journal articles, conference papers, standards, and theses
  • How to export and organise references using reference management software
  • How to set up alerts and keep up-to-date with research

Reference management software for Engineering DPhil students
Wednesday 2nd March, 15.00-16.00

Key topics :

  • Introduction to reference management
  • Overview of available software – Example with Refworks
  • How to choose the best tool for your needs
  • Comparisons among different tools

This session does not include practical activities, but a workbook will be distributed with guidelines on how to use four different packages: EndNote, Refworks, Mendeley and Zotero.
